John Taylor (Taylor, John, ) | The Online Books Page

One of the best essay collections from Early Republic Virginia. Taylor weighs in on the major topics of his day, from agricultural maintenance to politics, and to slavery. He offers his own prescriptions and political opinions. His dispositions match those of the faction called the Tertium Quids, the Old Republicans. Taylor's Arator might be said to have perfected and inaugurated the Early National jeremiad. Jul 01, Jefferson rated it liked it Recommends it for: those interested in political philosophy and the early American republic. Shelves: politics.

John Taylor of Caroline indeed is the Virginia Cato. His life and example are strongly indicative of the agrarianism and republicanism of the early United States. This book is first and foremost about agriculture and only indirectly about politics and political philosophy. However, to those early republicans, agriculture was fundamental to the life of the nation and to their political freedom.

Even though M. Bradford of blessed memory wrote an exceptional introduction to Taylor's best-known John Taylor of Caroline indeed is the Virginia Cato.

Bradford of blessed memory wrote an exceptional introduction to Taylor's best-known work which helped me understand its importance in history, I could not bring myself to enjoy reading it. Perhaps that is why I let it languish for twenty years before opening it and a year and a half to read it. It is an important classic, but I did not enjoy reading it. The most useful part of Taylor's work for me came late in Arator, in Note G. There he described the minority and majority parties which form in all governments and come not from ambition, birthright, race, or other segregator but from the nature of the work one does and the world one lives in.

The majority party are those who work with natural things -- things of Creation, if you will.

William Reese Company

This includes street sweepers and physicists and prostitutes and farmers. The minority party are those who work with conventional things -- things created by man. This pointedly includes those who work with politics, laws, and finances. In my words to simplify matters, the majority produce things for others and the minority party manipulates society for their own benefit, or for "faction, avarice, and ambition".

Moreover, Taylor says that all societies have these two parties, and they cannot be removed. Even if the people elect an honest man who works with his hands, he ends up in the government where he works with laws he helps create through strategy, compromise, and payoffs. People may slide between the two factions, but all societies have these two factions.

I found this to be a more interesting and compelling description of political society than anything Marx wrote. However, I had to read about a hundred pages describing or alluding to the best sources and uses of manure to get to that description. Honestly, I did not enjoy reading Arator.
